The intermediate shaft bearing is common weak point on '97-'08 Porsche sports cars (excluding GT3, GT2, and turbo). LN Engineering has developed a new ceramic bearing to replace the original steel part. Ceramic bearings last up to 5 times longer than steel. When the steel bearings fail it is catastrophic. This bearing replacement is done as preventative maintenance as a new engine can easily cost over $20,000.
About the Images
These images show the bearing replacement on a '99 Boxster. All photographs are courtesy of Ronald Breeze Photography. This job consists of removing the transmission, removing the clutch and flywheel, pulling out the old bearing and pressing in the new one. The repair is typically done at the same time as a clutch replacement or rear main seal replacement
